Chlorella vulgaris has been studied and applied across European and Asian agriculture for years, with peer-reviewed work demonstrating effects on plant growth, root development, nutrient efficiency, and crop response across multiple species. Its biochemical profile, approximately 45% protein, 20% lipids, 20% carbohydrates, plus bioactive compounds and essential amino acids, supports its function as a biostimulant rather than a fertilizer.
We do not claim that EcoFlourish is identical to the specific Chlorella vulgaris materials used in any historical research without manufacturer confirmation of the exact formulation and lineage. We refer to that body of research as the scientific foundation of the category and tie our product-specific claims to confirmed EcoFlourish and PURE CV field examples.
This distinction matters because it determines how the evidence on this page should be evaluated.

Root-zone and rhizosphere activity
Supporting Research + Field Examples
Published research on Chlorella vulgaris as a soil amendment supports effects on rhizosphere microbial activity, root architecture, and root mass development. Mechanism is attributed to a combination of bioactive compounds, amino acids, and the contribution of microalgae cells and metabolites to soil biological function.
In the Canna-Tech cannabis propagation report (Phoenix, AZ), PURE-CV Hydro applied as a weekly hand-drench during cloning and propagation was observed reducing plant stress from approximately 25% of plants affected to less than 3%, improving root development time from 14 to 21 days to 10 to 15 days, with consistent taproot formation in 5 to 7 days. No biofilm or irrigation clogging was observed in the hydroponic system.

Plant response and vigor
Grower-Reported Field Observations
Effects on plant vigor, color, growth characteristics, and structural strength have been reported across multiple crops. These are presented as grower-observed field results rather than replicated university trials, and the confidence level is appropriate to that.
William Bugenhagen reported on a two-season blueberry comparison (2020-2021) using PURE CV-50 at 1 part product to 20 parts water, applied every 2 weeks via foliar and soil application. Treated plants were reported to produce 20 to 30% more fruit by the grower’s observation, with thicker leaves, stronger plant growth, and reduced pest pressure compared to untreated plants. Freshly planted treated bushes produced fruit in year two; freshly planted untreated bushes did not.
In a mixed-site field observation across azaleas, beans, peppers, and jalapenos, treated plants were reported to show approximately 50% higher bean yield at harvest and visibly larger growth across plant types compared to untreated controls.

Nutrient-use efficiency
Field Trial + Commercial Observation
The hypothesis is that Chlorella vulgaris contributes to nutrient cycling, root absorption capacity, and the biological environment that supports nutrient acquisition. The result, when the protocol fits, is that the same fertility program produces better plant performance.
At Briar View Farms, winter wheat was no-tilled following a glyphosate burn-down on a field previously in hay and tobacco. Two PURE CV applications were made: one in November and one in mid-March alongside liquid nitrogen. The 4.95-acre control plot yielded 60 bushels per acre. The 5.37-acre PURE CV-treated plot yielded an average of 72 bushels per acre, with the same nitrogen program.
At Revis Farms, EcoFlourish was applied through irrigation at 25 ml per gallon at two-week intervals. The grower reported tomato quality and shelf life extended by several weeks post-harvest, documented with photos at 32 and 49 days post-harvest. Client-observed effect pending third-party lab verification.

Abiotic stress resilience
Field Observations, Variable Confidence
Supporting plant response to abiotic stress (heat, drought, transplant shock, salinity, pH events, weather damage) is one of the most-studied use cases for freshwater microalgae biostimulants. It is also the function with the most variability across crops and conditions, so we present it carefully.
In a Midwest produce operation, a cabbage crop suffered late-season hail damage. A rescue application of PURE CV reportedly contributed to approximately 25% yield recovery on a crop that would otherwise have been largely lost. Grower-anonymized at request.
In a Jamaica Scotch Bonnet pepper trial conducted by Hampshire Agriculture Company in Trelawney, treated plants were reported to show enhanced root mass development, improved nutrient absorption, healthier fruit formation, and increased resilience to heat stress and variable rainfall over a six-week comparison. This is an ongoing field study and pilot validation; we do not present quantified yield claims until we receive measured harvest data.

How to design a trial that tells your client the truth.
The most common reason a biological product gets dismissed by a grower is that it was never tested properly. Either it was applied to the wrong crop, at the wrong rate, in the wrong system, with no real comparison, or with a measurement framework that couldn’t detect the effect even if it existed.
A fair trial means designing the test so the answer is interpretable regardless of which direction it goes. That is what we want advisors to help us achieve with their clients.
